A Playful and Empowering Technique to Take Control of Your Mind
Hey there!
Life can sometimes throw us a curveball, and it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! I'm here to introduce you to a fun technique called "Thought-Stopping" that will help you regain control over your thoughts and put a smile back on your face. Let's get started!
Step 1: Find Your Zen Zone
Create an environment that feels safe and comfortable, allowing you to focus on the exercise. I have a few places that are my "taking a moment" space. My family also knows when I am there, I need a moment to breathe. I pick one of the following because they are ones I can get away from stimulation: in a bathroom, outside, on a walk, in my office or in my car.
Step 2: Embrace Your Feelings
Take a moment to acknowledge your feelings of overwhelm. Remember, it's okay to feel this way. By engaging in this exercise, you're taking an active step towards managing those overwhelming thoughts. My favorite phrase is "it's ok", I will have a moment come up (like a task I asked to have help with that was not done by the other person) and then instead of stewing on why it is so upsetting, I say "it's ok because ....". That helps reroute my thoughts into gratitude and not allow the negative spiral vortex happen.
Step 3: Meet Thought-Stopping
Thought-Stopping is a technique that interrupts negative thoughts and replaces them with more positive ones. It's like hitting the pause button on your worries and shifting gears to a happier state of mind.
Step 4: The Thought-Stopping Signal
Let's add a playful touch! Come up with a fun physical gesture or a silly dance move to use as your "Thought-Stopping Signal." It could be anything that feels natural to you, like making a stop sign with your hand or doing a victory dance.
Step 5: Stop, Collaborate, and Listen!
Now it's time to put your Thought-Stopping Signal into action! Whenever you catch yourself sinking into a negative thought spiral, perform your chosen gesture while energetically saying "Stop!" aloud.
Step 6: Flip the Switch
After you've interrupted the negative thought with your signal, it's time to switch gears. Replace that gloomy thought with something positive and uplifting. Imagine yourself in your favorite place, recall a happy memory, or think about something exciting you're looking forward to.
Step 7: Practice Makes Progress
Remember, this technique takes practice. The more you use it, the more effective it becomes. Start with small challenges and gradually work your way up. Celebrate your wins along the way, no matter how small they may seem!
Conclusion:
You've got this! By embracing the Thought-Stopping technique, you're taking control of your thoughts and paving the way for a more positive and empowered mindset. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process. If you ever need support, reach out to your friends, family, or a trusted mentor. You're never alone on this journey!
